The majority are socialists of one stripe or another, ranging from garden-variety liberals to hardcore Stalinists. They accept Christ?s central message of equality before God but reject any meaningful idea of God. They know every verse where Christ extolled the poor and condemned the rich, and they eagerly quote them, fully believing Jesus, were he alive today, would be one of them. In essence, socialists are Godless Christians* (GC?s).

This assumption is extremely important to the Godless Christian. For if Christ is God, then the GC must also recognize the fallen nature of the world, the principle reason, according the Gospels, that Jesus was sent into the world. The idea of man?s perfectibility, so central to leftist philosophy, explodes in the face of the Incarnation. One simply cannot maintain without contradiction that man can save himself while also believing that man has fallen from Grace. If there truly was such a breach, God, not man, would have to be the one to heal it. Thus, for the socialist, the Incarnation has to go. Once Christ becomes a man, and one rational enough to reject his own divinity at that, His message transforms into an immediate command; equality becomes a mandate applicable to this world, not the next.
