Break Free!

Pieces on how liberalism (or conservatism, for that matter) fails because its proponents are self-constrained have become rather tedious (particularly after watching as much West Wing as I have), but I thought this Slate piece on Grand Theft Auto actually made some decent points.

I think the piece was misplaced; what they seem to be advocating is the deliberate falsification of events to try to create a "mythos" for young people to grab onto?

And what happens when that mythos falls apart? Rosa Parks couldn't happen today - her role as a professional would have been exposed all over, long before the court case began.

You don't think that media myths can persist this day in age despite some inconvenient facts?

The Slate article is far worse than misplaced. It is yet another recycling of the progressive idea that because the people do not vote for them, the people must be imbeciles and therefore should be treated as such.

I think there's a difference between appreciating the effectiveness of pageantry and perception and saying that it only works because people are stupid. Republicans and conservatives have been very successful in portraying liberals as elitists and intellectual snobs based mostly on their demeanor. It sort of puts them in a catch-22 to suggest that becoming less commanding and "coming down" a little makes them condescending.

We could say that this is all indicative of the intellectual bankrupcy of liberalism, but I don't really think it is. Conservatives are having variations of the same debate about how to present ideas that will reverse the public's antipathy or indifference to them. It's salesmanship, which I view as different than condescension.

Some measures have been taken to guard against comment spam. All unregistered users must enter the letters and numbers below. Comments for unregistered user posts over 90 days old are also subject to moderation. You are free to set up an account and bypass these measures as well as be able to edit your posts. If Captcha isn't working, you are free to use the "Guest" account, the password being the last month of the year in all-lowercase letters.

(1) Create an account. Creating an account has a number of benefits. For one thing, Nucleus will not keep forgetting your name as it presently does. Secondly, it'll give you the opportunity to edit your own comments if you accidentally put HTML in there or something. Third, if I ever have to disable the blog, you'll still be able to see it. Lastly, it gives you a distinct name to comment as so that if someone with the same name wants to leave a comment, they won't mistake that person for you. If you would like me to create the account for you, please send me an email at first initial, middle initial, last name (all one word) at bigfoot.com or leave a message here as a guest. Once your account is created, you can log on in the fields on the left bar. You can change your password by logging in

(2) Sign in as "Guest." I have a special "Guest" account set up. The name is "Guest" (hence the superfluous-appearing quotation marks) and the password is the last month of the year in all lowercase. If this is abused by the spammers I'll have to come up with something else. If you do this, please sign your name on the comment so that I know who is talking and all that.

Make sure that none of your bookmarks have the www.* in front of the name. For some reason having that can cause some problems when trying to log in. I don't pretend to understand it, but there ya go.

Please note that HTML does not work within comments on this platform. URLs will be hyperlinked with a truncated form of the address given. No post can be more than 5,000 characters. I won't delete any comment unless it totally needs deleting.
