Bulleted Internetrium

NetThoughts:
- Is anyone else having problems with GoogleAds on Firefox? It doesn't tend to want to go where it's supposed to go, flashing stationary and obscuring the main text of the page.
- As mentioned to the left, spammers have found Ten Second News, so registration is now required over there. On the upshot, Nucleus did a fantastic job of catching their comments. I'm not sure how since I don't even think I had Comment Control on. But none of them got through. I wonder if there's a way to get it to block anything that puts "href" in a post. That would get rid of a whole lot of them right then and there.
- It's amazing how much easier the Internet has become, isn't it? I was just remembering how much of a hassle it was to get connected from the University of Houston dorms using Windows 95.
- It's a great thing that internet domain registration cost has become as low as it has, but I really wish there were some way to prevent people from buying up domain names for prospecting purposes. It's one thing when my preferred domain name is taken by someone that that's using it. It's another when it's taken up just because someone thought that someone else might someday need it.
- I know that you can keep certain sites from being archived, but is there any way to make a site completely invisible to search engines completely?

Observations

Why see google ads on Firefox? Get Adblock! (If you *want* to see the ads, though, ... I'm not the person to ask.)

If you want all bots to stay out of your site, just add a robots.txt file to your root directory, containing the following lines:
User-Agent: *
Disallow: /
That'll keep the well-behaved bots out, but there are plenty of spiders that do not obey the robots.txt protocol.

Spammers are notoriously not well-behaved. Really adding the robots.txt will just keep you out of the search engines.
It shouldn't be hard to block anyone using href in a post, a couple changes of the Nucleus code should take care of that.
I remember I did something on a site once that solved problems for a friend's site (Although it was a message board). Added code that a user had to be at the site X number of seconds before accepting a post. Not sure how easily it could be added to your site, but it's certainly an idea.

The Robots thing may not help with spammers, but it'll help with the last bit about avoiding search engines.

Comment spam is an ongoing problems that we're trying to address. Previously we required people to create accounts and log in. I am thankful to say that is no longer the case. We're giving Captcha another try and are playing around with a text-based Q&A variant of Captcha. So bear with us as we try to figure out how to best get a handle ont he problem. Please note that any comment on a post more than 30 days old will go into the moderation queue, where I will get to it when I can which could be once a week.
