Forgetting About Forgetting
R. Alex Whitlock
On Sunday I left Eel's apartment three times. The first time I left, I stopped and went back because I forgot something or another. The second time I left, I'd gotten in my car and driven a few blocks when I realized that I'd forgotten my phone. The third time out, Eel's landlord - who'd been working on the garden and saying "Hi" and "Bye" to me on each visit - asked if I had found whatever it was I kept coming back for her.

"Not really," I explained. The first trip back I forgot my laptop, but when I got back in I decided that I didn't need it. The second time I realized that I forgot my cell phone. Except that I didn't forget my cell phone here, but I forgot it this morning before I came over. I just forgot that I forgot it this morning and so I really didn't forget anything at all, I just thought I forgot."

After a couple seconds of silence, she repled, "I hope you and Camille take very good care of one another."

Heh. I have problems forgetting things too and sometimes I wonder if I shouldn't have a post-it note permanently pinned to my forehead.

I've done this before many, many times, actually. It was the landlord's quip that I found amusing this time around. Maybe it needs a bit more context to be funny. Eel is not much more organized than I am, hence the landlord's concern.

Comment spam is an ongoing problems that we're trying to address. Previously we required people to create accounts and log in. I am thankful to say that is no longer the case. We're giving Captcha another try and are playing around with a text-based Q&A variant of Captcha. So bear with us as we try to figure out how to best get a handle ont he problem. Please note that any comment on a post more than 30 days old will go into the moderation queue, where I will get to it when I can which could be once a week.
