Observations
Everyone has forgotten about Terry Schiavo now. The papal selection provides pundits everywhere with a change to invoke all the same issues, with a higher intellectual tone and more lasting stakes. But almost everyone is singing a predictable tune.
The one surprising thing that has emerged is the extent to which atheist Americans not only do not have religion, but flatly cannot understand it.
If only more people would realize how ignorant the US media is. Actually that's rather unfair. They aren't ignorant. They aren't even stupid. They know exactly what they do.
I was watching an episode of Boston Legal the other night when the prosecution lawyer (James Spader) put quite succinctly that the US media is a business. And that business is entertainment. Each is trying to fight for ratings. So if they slant the issues to pander to a particular group to get better ratings and more money, then that's the way it is.
I don't think athiest Americans are necessarily finding that they "have religion." Perhaps--and this is just a hunch--they simply pay respect when a man beloved by so many passes away. Perhaps they just feel the weight of others' sadness.
But, hey, that's just a hunch. What do I know?
