At The Dump, At The Dump, At The Dump Dump Dump!
R. Alex Whitlock
Some place in Houston opened up (or started advertising on the radio) at some point after I left the fair city. Those of you that do listen to the radio are undoubtedly familiar with "The Dump," a place that apparently specializes in selling expensive stuff cheap based on purchasing by availability rather than demand.

The weird thing is that I find the ads on the radio oddly captivating. The narrator has some sort of infectuous enthusiasm. It's not like those car commercials where the dealer or announcer is "really excited" about this sale or that. This Dump guy sounds really excited! I've never heard someone so excited about Persian rugs being so cheap and I can't imagine any consumer being that excited. Yet he sounds credible throughout the commercial.

It's bizarre. Whoever that actor is, he deserves a raise.

The advertising hype doesn't really correspond with reality.

On my trip there, I saw a lot of furniture I would categorize as "leftovers" at very expensive prices. But the advertising surely had driven a crowd to the place.

What it reminded me of was the St. James Furniture people, who always have a "going out of business" sale to clear their junk before moving to a new location. I don't think the St. James people are affiliated with The Dump, but a refined version of the selling approach seems to be at work.

My advice is that if you're gonna roadtrip up that way, just make a beeline for Fry's and forget about the Dump.

Not surprising. Great commercials and great actor, though.

I was up that way earlier in the week and really, really meant to stop by Fry's, but as with almost everything this week, I have one or two things to do wherever I go and then I gotta go be somewhere else. Usually to eat something!

Of course Alex, there's the Fry's that opened a few months back just south of NASA Road 1...

Fry's opened south of Nasa Rd 1 and I move to Rosenberg? Dammit. Well they are building one on the Southwest freeway too. Was suppose to open last fall, and has yet to. I wonder what's keeping it back.
