Observations
As a man who plays D&D, I find that remark highly offensive.
D&D playing is the rule and not the exception among most of my friends so I'm not particularly one to criticize. I also agree with the premise put forth in the original Boston Globe article about the contributions RPGs make. But as with anime and comic book fans (and I am, to varying degrees, both), there tends to be a higher concentration of less socially adept people there. I wouldn't count you and the gang among those, though.
I just found the quote amusing.
