Audience Participation: Mozilla Firefox Issues
R. Alex Whitlock
Has anyone experienced either of the following problems with Mozilla Firefox?

1) Pop-up Ads: Generally speaking, Mozilla squashes pop-ups, but it seems like lately more and more are getting through. It used to just be University of Phoenix stuff, but lately others are as well.

2) Slow load-up times: It seems to start up pretty slow, particularly just after the computer has been rebooted. While my laptop is a bit low on resources (and not the fastest computer around), my computer at work is 2+GHz and with 500+MB of RAM and my main computer at the apartment is 1.4GHz with 768 of RAM and it starts up slow on all three.

The slow startup times on windows are to be expected for any browsers not IE. Lots of DLL's and such must be loaded into memory. Same is true of any other OS actually, but Windows does have the worst memory management of any of the major OSes at this point.

As for pop-ups. I noticed that too with 1.0pre version of Firefox. I think some bugs are still being patched on the subject as we speak. Although I did notice Firefox doing a bit better after I installed the patch for 1.0pre (0.10.1).

I've heard not-so-good things about 1.0, so I haven't upgraded it.

I hope they take care of the pop-up problem.

Know anything about SlimBrowser?

Well since I installed the latest 1.0 versions (.10.1) I haven't had any more issues with the browser. It functions quite well. I can't wait for the final release.

As for SlimBrowser. Well, for starters I try to steer clear of Windows only apps in favor of apps that run on multiple platforms. With that, I tend to stick with Mozilla, Firefox, and Opera.

I'm using Firefox 0.8, and the boyfriend has 0.9. No issues for either of us. I don't get ANY popups unless I specifically choose to UNblock them. And, start-up appears to be the same speed as always.

What version of Firefox are you running, Alex?
