Audience Participation: Computer Help!
R. Alex Whitlock
I'm almost sheepish to ask these questions, but I need a starting point:

1) Believe it or not, it's been a long time since I've purchased a modem. I've had high speed Internet since I was in college and the few times I didn't have it I could use my laptop. However, recent events compel me to go ahead and purchase a modem. Does anyone have any recommendations (or negative recommendations)?

2) I need computer screws. Tons of them. Of all kinds ranging from case screws to hard drive screws to spoilers. Where can I get a ton of screws?

You can get computer screws, tons of them, from my washing machine. There is an endless supply. Oh, also I often find them under my bare feet. It's like they mystically appear RIGHT where I'm stepping. It's such a happy little magic trick.

Those screws will come in handy one day. Just wait. Your computer will be falling completely apart, and you'll be sobbing in the corner, and I'll appear majestically with a handful of screws to save the day.

*cough*

Um, about modems... I think they're all pretty much the same nowadays. You don't have to buy U.S. Robotics to get a good modem anymore.

Only way you can go wrong is to buy winmodem. They perform terrible compared to real modems. Winmodems, for those playing at home, was someones birght idea to take some of the modem processing (like it's that much) off the modem itself and place let the system take the burden. Granted the burden is small, but it still manages to hurt modem performance (I blame windows, naturally).

Not to mention that any endevors into Linux will leave you cursing a winmodem any day of the week (since most, if not all winmodem manufacturers are windows only, hence the term winmodem).

We're giving Captcha another try and are playing around with a text-based Q&A variant of Captcha. So bear with us as we try to figure out how to best get a handle ont he problem. Please note that any comment on a post more than 30 days old will go into the moderation queue, where I will get to it when I can which could be once a week.
