When Not To Save Money
R. Alex Whitlock
While commenting on dollar stores over at No Girl Friday, I realized that while it's great to save money on some things, on others it's never worth it. Three things come to mind: Cheese, batteries, and toilet paper.

What're your "spoil yourself" items?

Bagels.

I can't stand those cheap, dry bagels. You know. The ones Andrie insists on buying.

Food is pretty much the only thing I'll shrug and pay full price for (especially if it's organic/free range/fair trade). Dinners out are included, albeit rarely: sushi & thai are favorites.

I bargain-hunt on pretty much everything else.

The nice, chewy, expensive bagels aren't vegan. You want yummy, try dairy!

Hmm.

Bacon, toilet paper, and cat food (trust me on this one... cheap cat food = extra-smelly cat shit).

Heh.

I actually prefer less expensive brands of toilet paper. I prefer Soft-n-Gentle which is neither soft nor gentle but extremely effective and surprisingly affordable.

Yeah... but if I found an expensive brand I preferred, I'd buy it over the cheaper stuff.

I'm with Linus. Food is a budget-buster for me. Central Market all the way.

Yikes... Central Market?!

I absolutely love their sandwich deli place. Great food, too, but I'd have to take a second job to eat there on a regular basis.

Next time Eel and I are in Houston, I'm definitely taking her there, though.

My mom was complaining about CM's produce, especially in the higher-end stuff. I guess they don't move enough $3 apples to keep them fresh...
